This shows the growth of the driver population (for-hire and private trucking) from 2006 to 2011. In Ontario, growth has been relatively flat, although the distribution changed slightly in favour of the trucking industry.
The strong employment growth in the trucking and other industries in Quebec, Alberta, and BritishColumbia may be an indication of the strength of the resource industries in those provinces.

The Canadian Trucking Alliance, a federation of the provincial trucking associations, representing over 4,500 motor carriers has formed a Blue Ribbon Task Force on the Driver Shortage to try and provide leadership in the daunting task of developing a coherent direction for moving forward on the issue.
