Despite relatively strong increases in productivity from the industry over the past couple of decades, there is reason to believe that productivity gains in the future will be muted.

While the industry benefited from deregulation and the opening of trade in the 1980s and 1990s, and while significant increases in size and weight regulations during this time allowed for the greater haul of goods per truck and driver, it is unlikely that we will see similar increases in the years to come

At the national level, the industry requirement for drivers is expected to increase by 17 per cent, or nearly 30,000 drivers. In percentage terms, demand growth is expected to be strongest in Ontario and Alberta.
